It is amazing how my teenagers are really not keen on cottage pie at all but with a few tweaks they love this! Also I go for the one with as low a fat as possible, but you do what is right for your budget and family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Potatoes<\/strong> &#8211; again the amount depends on the size of your meal, you need enough that it will cover your pie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Onion<\/strong> &#8211; I grab a handful from the freezer. If using fresh then one will do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carrot<\/strong> &#8211; again the amount depends on how big you are making it. If my family are following this you will need at least 3 or 4! Peel and dice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salt<\/strong> &#8211; just a small amount.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Beef stock<\/strong> &#8211; we just use Bisto. Again use your judgement to cover the mix without making it too wet. I think this is potentially around 650ml.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional Ingredients<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ginger<\/strong> &#8211; 15g fresh &#8211; however I just shake some ground ginger from the jar!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Curry Powder<\/strong> &#8211; 1 tablespoon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegetable oil <\/strong>&#8211; drizzle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ground Turmeric<\/strong> &#8211; 1 teaspoon &#8211; or throw it over to cover like I do!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Garlic Cloves<\/strong> &#8211; 2 or 3 &#8211; peeled and chopped<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Baby Leaf Spinach<\/strong> &#8211; 80g<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tomato Paste<\/strong> &#8211; just a few squeezes to help thicken and flavour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coriander<\/strong> &#8211; fresh, optional to decorate and for taste on the top &#8211; we haven\u2019t done this as yet!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@surojadek\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/magdalena-olszewska-9rt6gV_IjhA-unsplash.jpg?resize=1000%2C726&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/magdalena-olszewska-9rt6gV_IjhA-unsplash.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/magdalena-olszewska-9rt6gV_IjhA-unsplash.jpg?resize=300%2C218&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/magdalena-olszewska-9rt6gV_IjhA-unsplash.jpg?resize=768%2C558&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Equipment for for Potato Topped Beef Keema Pie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>Oven and Hob<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Knife<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Chopping board<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Peeler<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Saucepan<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Colander<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Frying pan<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Wooden spoon<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Jug (for mixing beef stock)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Teaspoon<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Tablespoon<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Kitchen towel<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Oven-proof dish<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Oven gloves<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Method for for Potato Topped Beef Keema Pie<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Preparation Stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>First <strong>prepare <\/strong>anything that needs peeling and chopping &#8211;<ul><li>Potatoes &#8211; without peeling into bite sized pieces.Onion &#8211; peel and dice if not using frozen.Garlic &#8211; chop and grate.Carrots &#8211; peel and dice.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><ul><li>Ginger &#8211; if fresh scrape off the skin with a teaspoon and finely chop or grate.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Starting Cooking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Next <strong>preheat<\/strong> the oven to 220\u00b0C\/200\u00b0C (fan)\/ 425\u00b0F\/Gas mark 7)<ul><li>Place the <strong>potatoes<\/strong> into a saucepan with plenty of water and a pinch of <strong>salt.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Put on the heat and bring to the <strong>boil<\/strong>. Cook for <strong>12-15 mins<\/strong>, <strong>drain<\/strong> and return to pot to <strong>steam dry<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile add the <strong>beef mince<\/strong> to a frying pan and cook until <strong>browned<\/strong> all over, using your wooden spoon to break and turn it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once browned add the chopped <strong>onion<\/strong> and <strong>carro<\/strong>t, with a pinch of <strong>salt<\/strong>. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until softened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adding Stock and Flavours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Then make up the <strong>beef stock<\/strong> mix and add the <strong>curry powder, garlic, ginger<\/strong>, and <strong>tomato paste<\/strong>. <strong>Add<\/strong> to the frying pan. Cook for a couple of minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash (and kitchen towel dry) and add the <strong>spinach<\/strong> to the frying pan, stir (continuously) and cook for 2-3 minutes. This is until the spinach has wilted and the sauce has thickened. This is the <strong>Beef Keema<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flavour the Potatoes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Return to the <strong>potatoes<\/strong> and add the <strong>vegetable oil<\/strong> and <strong>turmeric, <\/strong>with a<strong> pinch of salt<\/strong>, gently mixing it in by turning them with a spoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/beef-keema-pie-close-up.jpg?resize=1000%2C750&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"How to Make Potato Topped Beef Keema Pie close up\" class=\"wp-image-33792\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/beef-keema-pie-close-up.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/beef-keema-pie-close-up.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/beef-keema-pie-close-up.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cook in the Oven<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transfer<\/strong> the Beef Keema to an <strong>oven proof dish <\/strong>and<strong> top <\/strong>with your flavoured<strong> potatoes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then put in the oven for <strong>20-25 minutes<\/strong> or until the potatoes are golden and crisp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next pick the <strong>coriander<\/strong> leaves from their stalks &#8211; discarding the stalks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally remove the pie from the oven (using the oven gloves) and allow to cool before serving &#8211; garnishing with the coriander leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See more <a href=\"https:\/\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/blog\/category\/recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">recipes<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my mind Potato Topped Beef Keema Pie is just a tasty variation on cottage pie.
