Things to think about when buying a family car

What do you want to use your car for? For us it maybe that just one person needs to use it, or any combination up to 7 people – this means we have always gone for MPVs. On a general basis when we are using an MPV it is for when we are going on long journeys and everyone needs room and comfort (ie stop the kids arguing)! We thought about downsizing now that our oldest is at university but after our own MPV broke down we looked at options of one of us using public transport to meet the others, but we found it was much harder than it first seemed. We were looking at taking two cars for our holiday to Cornwall but anyone who knows me will know that I am not very confident with driving (and passed after my 6^th attempt!) Therefore I was absolutely delighted when Peugeot offered us the loan of their 5008 in return for an honest review.

Peugeot 5008 Safety

When you are looking for a family car I should imagine that safety will come up high in your list of priorities. The Peugeot 5008 has:

• NCAP 5* Safety Rating (New Car Assessment Programme – The (European Car Safety Rating which essentially measures how safe the car is if it was involved in a collision – with 5* being the safest).
• ESP Standard and ASR (a computerized technology that improves a vehicle’s stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction/skidding. When ESP detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help “steer” the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer).
• 6 Airbags (including curtain airbags).
• Tyre pressure sensors.
• 3 point seatbelts – for all individual seats.
• Isofix points for all 3 seats in the second row allowing 3 car seats and with top tethers on seat back  in row 3.
• Additional rear view mirror – making it easier to see if the passengers are okay, and/or to be able to see around them to get a clearer view out of the back window.

Peugeot 5008 Comfort and Convenience

As you can imagine travelling with all those people all that way they can get a bit fidgety and distracting (did I mention it was 168 miles away, without even taking into account the fact that we left at lunch time when all the children broke up for the summer holidays and the roads were literally murder!) – What better than to have features which makes them feel more comfortable and the driving easier:

• Adjustable seating –
  • Row 1: height adjustable seats and adjustable inside armrest.
  • Row 2 can be tilted and also slide over 130mm for legroom (perfect for our two teenagers back there!)
  • Row 3: Seats can be raised and lowered with outer fixed armrest.
• Air conditioning in the back – all occupants can choose whether to be cooled or heated by the vents on the side of the pillars
• Automatic Electric Brake with Hill Assist – the electric brake with hill assist helped my confidence a lot – as I always worry about what if we roll backwards!
• Climate control in the front – . That saved on the windows open or closed, blowers on or off argument for a start!
• Courtesy lighting and electric folding door mirrors
• Cruise Control and Speed Limiter – great for such a long drive on the motorway.
• Directional Headlights – which follow the direction of your steering, making it easier to see when you go around a corner.
• Distance alert – to let the driver know when they are getting too close to a vehicle or object in front of them.
• Folding tables – attached to the seats for the passengers.
• Heated front seats
• High level of sound insulation – making it easier for occupants even in row 3 to hear conversation and music, but also there is an option for the music to be set to just the driver.
• Parking Space Measurement System – when driving past at speeds of up to 12mph the Peugeot 5008 will measure a space and tell the driver whether parallel parking would be possible, difficult or not advised.
• Start/Stop technology.
  

Peugeot 5008 Versatility

As I have mentioned what we use our MPV for and how many of us are in it can vary greatly. Over the years we have come to rely on our MPV for more than just getting us from A to B, with it cutting costs with things such as transporting furniture, or taking away waste, as well as the obvious long day trips and holidays.

The Peugeot 5008 has a Multiflex Interior (row 2 the 3 individual seats fold flat and row 3 seats fold completely flat into the floor: Plus a folding flat front passenger seat with picnic table – so there’s no worries about long items such a Christmas tree). Also it features Family Storage Pack (storage under front seats and footwells).

Tech info: 1,247 litres of rear load capacity (row 3 seats flat); 2,506 litres (rows 2 &3 flat).

Peugeot 5008 Style

The new re-styled 5008 compact MPV does not look bulky like some other MPVs on the market (in fact it looks so neat that I was worried that we wouldn’t all fit comfortably with our luggage – but indeed we did!). Features include C-Shaped design, floating front grille, leather steering wheel, cloth trim (which can be upgraded to leather), chrome trim, 17” alloys (18” on the Allure) and you can upgrade for Metallic paint.

Peugeot 5008 Allure BlueHdi Additional Features

We had the Peugeot 5008 Allure BlueHdi 120 Auto model which comes with some additional features:

• Cielo Panoramic Glass Roof – the best part of this was we could have it open so that the children could see the sky and have extra light (which I think helped reduce travel sickness) but when the sun was shining on their screens too much we could just leave it open over the front row (or completely close it etc).
• Rear Tinted windows
• 18” Alloys
• Alarm – (Thatcham 1 Category approved)
• Colour Reversing camera – this was amazing and parking and reversing are 2 things I really hate. I truly got to test out the function when I was completely on my own and someone parked opposite me in a tiny space and I had to turn the car around without hitting anything! It shows you on the screen and gives you guide lines – as well as making a beeping sound when you are too close to things.
• Rows 2&3 Sun Visor Curtains – it was really sunny when we travelled so again these were really handy. They also helped block out the light when you need your child to go/or stay asleep.
• Colour heads up display – a driver information interface that displays key driving information (such as speed) without the driver having to take their eyes off the road directly in front of them to look down.
• In car entertainment – RT6, with colour satellite and Bluetooth.

Peugeot 5008 Cost

For most of us a big deciding factor is how much cost is involved. Things to consider are the initial cost, insurance group, VED/road Tax, Fuel Economy and possibly the impact on the environment.

• Initial Cost: MRRP on the road Prices start from £22,620.00 and go up to the model we had (without the extra specifications) of £26,520.00.
• Enhanced specification available at every entry level with a small increase to price (£200 Access, £300 Active and £350 Allure)
• All vehicles first registered in the UK and purchased from a UK Peugeot Dealer benefit from a Peugeot 2 year unlimited mileage manufacturer’s warranty and a free optional additional 1 year of warranty provided by the Peugeot Dealer Network in the UK. All new Peugeots come with Peugeot Assistance, breakdown assistance service provided by the AA.
• Insurance Group: The model we had was Group 19E but other models vary.
• VED/Road Tax for 12 months: £30 (Vehicle exercise duty or road tax varies according to CO2 emissions and fuel type of the vehicle).
• Fuel Cost: Estimated £980 for 12,000 miles. We found that with a fully load (6 passengers and stuffed to the rafters with luggage) we averaged at around 45+ miles per gallon – considering the size of the vehicle and how much that it is carrying we feel that it is very economical.
• BlueHDi Diesel engine: “the exclusive diesel emission control technology, uniquely combing oxidation catalysis. SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and the DPF with additive, the only one to combine reduction of NOx by up to 90%, elimination of particulates and reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The DPF traps all particulates in all conditions of use of the vehicle, as soon as the engine starts, hot or cold, in town, on a main road or on the motorway. They are then burned automatically during “regeneration” – with no effect on the vehicle operation.”
• Carbon dioxide emissions (g/km): 112g/km (some specifications of this make/model may have lower CO2 emissions.

Conclusions of the Peugeot 5008

I have to say that the Peugeot 5008 is a lovely family car. Whether you need it for a large family like ourselves, or just want more room it is a great drive. I was a bit anxious about driving a brand new car (especially since I have never driven an automatic before) but the 5008 really made it easy and I felt like a much more confident driver (in fact so much so that my husband has already been out to see if we can buy one). It has so many wonderful features that I am sure I have missed loads out. My favourite features were the reversing camera, heated seats, the ability to plug my iPhone in with the lightning cable (to charge and listen to it) and the Cielo Panoramic Glass Roof. My husband likes a car to have a bit of oomph and was pleased with how the 5008 drives (it even has a sports mode). We were able to fit comfortably 3 adults, a teenagers and 2 small children (including a booster seat), plus holiday luggage comfortably. All in all I would say this is a very good car especially for those with larger families (who may have a lot of passengers trying to distract you).
