Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip Storyline
Alvin and the Chipmunks are back again in The Road Chip. The boys are taking a break from their career to live a normal life – but they are far from normal and love to sing, dance and perform. The story actually starts with an amazing party as a leaving do for the Chipettes (who are going to host American Idol) and as a surprise for Dave’s birthday (the surprise is he knows nothing about it and when Dave returns he puts the dampeners on it!) Despite their behaviour Dave tells the Chipmunks that he wants to spend as much time with them as possible before he heads off to Miami to produce a record for rising pop artist Ashley. This involves a game of golf where he introduces his new girlfriend Samantha. Trouble is what the boys don’t know is that she has a son (Miles) – and he’s not very nice to them!
Dave can’t take all the boys to Miami as he only has a plus one (and says it is wrong to pick favourites) so decides to ask Samantha to go with him. When the boys find an engagement ring they assume that Dave wants to ask her to marry him. Frightened that not only will Miles become part of their family, but that Dave will not want them anymore, they decide to head to Miami to stop the proposal. But Dave has got neighbour Ms Price to babysit the boys (including Miles). So together they come up with a plan – which involves drugging up some squirrels and dressing them in the Chipmunks’ clothes.
Miles sneaks Alvin, Simon and Theodore on to the plane but there’s trouble when Air Marshall James Suggs spots them on board. He blames The Chipmunks for his girlfriend dumping him on Christmas – and when the animals are let out and an emergency landing is required, he has all the ammunition he needs. Miles and The Chipmunks get away but Suggs puts a no fly restriction on The Chipmunks.
The Chipmunks perform in a bar to gain shelter and are a big hit. But it isn’t long until Suggs has caught up with them and so they start a bar brawl as a distraction. The Chipmunks start to learn more about Miles, such as that his dad didn’t die but left him when he was five. Together they help one another, and look out for each other – “we’re all in this together!” on the journey to Miami.
Thoughts on Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip
I shall not spoil the ending but Alvin and the Chipmunks was a fantastic film which worked on so many levels and I felt appealed to a variety of audiences. There is a great moral message about not jumping to conclusions too soon, with the boys working through their feelings of becoming a blended family. There is also a good message for girls as the Chipettes are portrayed as being the successful ones (because girls are more mature). This modern day film has plenty of references to the now (such as Twitter) and then (references to other films such as the Shining and The Hangover). Filled with great characters (look out for RedFoo, as himself, and My name is Earl’s Crabman, Eddie Steeples), catchy tunes (including Uptown Funk, Turn Down for What, and Juicy Wiggle, Monk Remix), humour and an easy to follow storyline – this film is well worth a watch.
