When considering returning to work I couldn’t think of anywhere that would have quite the same benefits as working at McDonald’s. But actually since working there I have discovered even more numerous advantages and opportunities for personal and professional growth
In this blog post, I aim delve into the remarkable benefits that come with being part of the McDonald’s team. Including flexible schedules, the pay and benefits, how they aim to take care of well-being and career development.
Flexible Schedules at McDonald’s
At McDonald’s, one of the standout benefits is the flexibility of work schedules. Whether you’re a student looking for part-time employment or an individual seeking flexible hours to balance your personal life, McDonald’s understands the importance of accommodating its employees’ needs. This allows for a healthy work-life balance, making it an ideal choice for those seeking flexibility in their job.
They offer a range of contracts including flexible and guaranteed minimum hours. As a carer myself they are aware that I can only work a certain number of hours and are mindful of that. Also they are understanding when my availability changes at short notice and I can no longer work those hours.
McDonald’s Competitive Pay and Benefits
Working at McDonald’s in the UK also comes with competitive pay. For crew members like myself, is paid fortnightly. As I clock in and out I am paid for every minute I am working there. So to get paid so frequently is really helpful, especially for those who find themselves with an unexpected bill as there is often a chance to work more hours.
Employees receive fair compensation for their work, including opportunities for pay increases based on performance and experience.
Employee perks
Additionally, McDonald’s offers a range of benefits such as healthcare plans, exclusive access to company-sponsored events. Not forgetting free food and drink for every shift; free food to try new promotions in the McDonald’s App – as well as discounted employee meals when not working*. These perks add value to the overall employment experience. Not forgetting that you’ll be among the first to know what new promotions are coming!
McDonald’s Employee Discounts
But the employee discounts do not stop with just McDonald’s themselves! Either online, or by utilising the Smart Spending App, money off can be found on a huge range of products and services: This can be through reloadable cards or instant vouchers (which take minutes if that to obtain).
These are then just treated like gift cards. There are weekly, and sometimes daily, deals offering even further discount on these rewards. Plus they can often be used in conjunction with other offers – such as 3 for 2s in store, or cashback using the card you have purchased the discounted gift voucher with.
McDonald’s – A People First Employer
McDonald’s have always been known for their people first ethos. Always ensuring that customers have magic moments and that employees feel safe, respected and well-supported. Training is given to ensure everyone knows and respects these core values.
In my short time I have seen a manager stand up for an employees rights over their race (from a customer), and when it was really hot we were provided with ice-lollies – for example. This as well as being aware that how we are a very diverse team.
Supportive work environment
McDonald’s is committed to fostering a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, diversity, and inclusion. Team members often develop strong bonds and create lasting friendships, making the workplace enjoyable and supportive. In fact it is where I met my good friend Julie – whose wedding I went to!
This is as well as ensuring with have our own space for on break away from the customers, if we so wish. Which also has toilets provided. As well as scheduled breaks, at the manager’s discretion, other quick breaks may also be taken – if for example a drink or toilet break is required.
Engagement Team
The company encourages collaboration and recognizes the contributions of its employees, creating a sense of belonging and camaraderie among the team. Despite having only been back at McDonald’s for less than four months I have recently become of our People Manager’s Engagement Team. Our aim is to ensure that everyone has a positive experience when at work, but also feel that as a company we are approachable even if it is to do with problems outside of work. Being accepted on this Team so early on makes me feel very valued and respected.
Plus there are many different ways to get in touch with people if you have a problem. Plus with such a variety of people to go to, there’s also always someone you are bound to feel comfortable talking too.
Career Development Opportunities

* subject to terms and conditions
I worked at McDonalds when I was in my late teens, almost 25 years ago and loved it, the money was good and I loved the free meal each shift. It does sound like a better company to work for now compared to when I was there. I left because the shifts they had me working were ridiculous. Closing at midnight and of course all the cleaning, then getting home well after 1am and then starting again at 6am the next morning, every weekends plus random shifts during the week. It wasn’t all bad though, on the late shift everyone working got free taxis home.
It sounds like you are getting on really well and they do everything to look after their staff now. x
