When it comes to setting up a new home there’s a lot to think about. With university moving out is slightly easier as not everything is needed. Some provided, some shared. But still there’s a lot to think about and it can be costly. A University Equipment Moving out kit list can be really helpful to making sure you do not miss anything out.
Ideas to save money are by having old things, looking on sites such as Freecycle or waiting until sale days such as Amazon Prime day. Either way it is a good idea to have in mind a list of things you need for University.
University Equipment for the Kitchen
When it comes to university kitchen equipment it depends where they are staying. Is it halls or a private rent for example? In terms of this post I am not thinking about whether they are straight off buying their first home at the same time – which would really be the most ideal situation!
Here are a list of things for the kitchen that may be used when at university. Mark off any already provided or not needed; next tick off the ones you have bought ready to take.

- Wash cloths

- Airer/clothes horse
- Dusters
- Water bottle/drinks flask

Additional Kitchen Equipment
Realistically they might also want to think about what they will actually need. For instance if they are likely to live off take-out, pizza and ready meals they will not be needing half the cooking equipment!

Of course there’s all the normal kitchen things that can be bought at the supermarket and most likely done with the food shop. It may be best to buy them there as opposed to getting them in advanced.

- Washing up liquid
- Freezer bags
- Kitchen cleaner
- Window Cleaner
- Polish
- Kitchen roll
- Bin bags
- First aid essentials – plasters, pain relief
- Lighter/matches if required
Depending on how eco they are they may want a food waste caddy and bags too! Also I imagine a kitchen bin will be provided.
University Equipment for the Bathroom
- Toilet brush
- Bin
- Cleaning products (to make the bathroom clean)
- Cleaning products for the body (shampoo/conditioner/body wash/shaving gel, razors, toothpaste, and so on)
- Towels
- Toothbrush
- Nail clippers
- Scrubbing brush
- Bath mat
- Hair brush/comb
University Equipment for the Bedroom
- Quilt
- Pillows
- Sheets
- Duvet cover
- Pillow cases
- Mattress protector
- Computer
- Printer
- Extension cable
- Headphones
- Bags/suitcase
- Clothes hangers
- Bucket (useful if someone is sick, to soak clothes in, keep recycling in – and all manner of other things!)
- Stationery – pens. Pencils, highlighters, folders, paper, post it notes, Scissors
- Contraception
- Lamp
- Mirror
- Clothes basket (for dirty washing)
- TV
- Hot water bottle
- Chargers – tooth, computer, phone, headsets
- Posters, rug, and other bits and bobs to make it feel homely
University Clothing
- Seasonal clothing (sunglasses, gloves, scarves, hats)
- Comfortable shoes and clothes for lectures
- Dressing gown
- At least one interview outfit
- At least one swimming costume or pair of trunks and beach towel
- Slippers
- Raincoat, umbrella, wellies
- Workout gear
- Sliders
- Fancy dress outfit
And finally they may want to take a bike to get around on – plus a lock of course.
I see a lot of websites suggest that they need to take all their documentation with them too – such as their passports. Honestly I think they are better off at home, along with anything of real value that they wouldn’t want damaged or stolen – at least until they can be absolutely sure it will be safe there. However, someone pointed out that they may need them for ID on their first day, and certain courses for DBS checks for placements; or even if they are going to get a job whilst they are there.
This is our second son going off to University, and have done it ourselves – but is there anything I have forgotten?

That is a very useful list, but oh my goodness, it is so much stuff!
I must admit I keep thinking about these things briefly, then pushing it to the back of my mind. But I know we have to focus soon, as my son is going travelling in August and won’t get home until a few days before he goes to uni. Unfortunately, until results day, we won’t know which accommodation he is going to, so won’t know for example how much kitchen equipment he will need. (He’ll definitely be cooking, no ready meals and takeaways for him!)
