Greek Yogurt – The Highest Protein and the Best Tasting

One of the health switches I made was by changing to Greek Yogurt. Firstly I still eat far too much sugar, so have a very sweet tooth. When I first made the modification to my diet the only yogurts I was eating was the flavoured ones. This was quite the challenge. This led me to looking at the protein content of them too.

Greek Yogurt Not Greek Style

Initially I bought Greek Style yogurt as I didn’t realise that there was any difference. Obviously these were cheaper too. It wasn’t long though before I decided to pay the extra and make the move to Greek yogurt.

Different Brands and Supermarkets

Admittedly, I have only tried the Greek yogurts from supermarkets and not even sure if there’s anywhere better to buy them from. One of the main reasons I eat so much of it is convenience though.

Since I settled on my favourite Greek Yogurt I have also tried them from Aldi and M&S – but they did not change my opinion. Aldi was okay, but I am afraid I really did not like the (overpriced sorry) M&S one!

Four Greek Yogurts Listed from High to Low Protein

So here are some of the Greek yogurts I tried, with their nutritional values. Having starting with the highest in protein. Not forgetting what I thought that they tasted like. Note that this is just straight eating it. Adding fruit, seeds and nuts at most.

They may be better if used for cooking. Maybe even with honey!

Fage Total 0% Fat

This is obviously the best Greek yogurt for you. Honestly I wish I could have liked it. Not even with a mix of sugary fruit, seeds and nuts could I make this taste good enough to warrant the nutritional goodness it offers. A lot of people I know use it in overnight oats and things like that. Again that’s not for me as it’s too much time and preparation.

Fage Total 0% fat Greek yogurt

Not only did I find that Fage Total 0% fat tasted absolutely disgusting, but that also it had a silly extra layer of packaging!

Tesco £5.55 for 950g – equivalent of £2.92 per 100g

Nutrition per 100g

  • 10.3g protein
  • 54kcal
  • 0g  fat
  • 0g saturates
  • 3.0g sugars
  • 0.10g salt

Fage Total 5% Fat

Given that Fage Total is highly recommended and does offer the most in terms of protein I tried to see if the 5% Fat variety was any more tolerable. It was not the greatest taste but much better than the fat free. Still has that silly extra layer of packaging.

Fage Total 5% fat greek yogurt

Although better tasting than the Fage Total 5% it just wasn’t worth it for me. This would be forcing myself to eat something really not nice just for the protein and currently I don’t think that’s a sustainable idea.

Tesco £5.55 for 950g – equivalent of £2.92 per 100g

Nutrition per 100g

  • 9g protein
  • 93kcal
  • 5g  fat
  • 3.6g saturates
  • 3g sugars
  • 0.10g salt

Tesco finest Greek Yogurt

Tesco finest is my go-to Greek yogurt. In fact it tastes so good (even as a stand-alone product) that I possibly eat too much of it at once. Bloody delicious! As a bonus it also doesn’t have lots of silly extra packaging.

Obviously the flip side is that it is quite a lot lower in protein and higher in fat. Quite comparable in sugars though! Calorie wise it is a lot more than the 0% Fage too!

Tesco £2.20 500g

Nutrition per 100g

  • 6.1g protein
  • 132kcal
  • 10.3g  fat
  • 7.2g saturates
  • 3.3g sugars
  • 0.2g salt

Morrisons the Best Authentic Luxury Greek Yogurt

Morrisons offering is slightly lower in protein. However, it is lower in fat slightly compared to the Tesco finest. Obviously again the Fage nutritionally is the best. This one does taste okay to me – and I am less likely to eat a whole tub (unlike Tesco finest which I over indulge on).

Again it doesn’t have any silly extra layers of packaging!

Which Greek yogurts have you tried? Would you recommend any? Or do you have an opinion on ones to avoid?

I actually started looking at protein levels in Greek yogurt when making small changes to my diet to help with menopause. Personally I know I am still eating far too much sugar but this has helped not have such a bad breakfast.

Thanks to Sarah at Mum of Three World for reminding me about this unfinished post as she looks for ways to up her protein.
