De Schatberg Netherlands – A Great Base for parkrun

Using De Schatberg Netherlands Eurocamp worked as a great base for attending various different parkrun locations. Not only did we use it for travelling to several in the Netherlands but also it was easy enough to go into Germany. Once we drove to a train station and the other we drove directly to the park. Perfect for those seeing a Z for their parkrun Alphabeteer challenge or attending on parkrun Special Days.

Booking De Schatberg

The first time was over the October half term and booked with the Sun Holidays. We extended the break to include two Saturdays by booking another campsite directly with Eurocamp in another part of the Netherlands. We have also previously visited Duinrell which would also make a fantastic base and holiday experience. However, this was a lot more expensive for when we wished to visit.

Second time we went for the Special days and wanted just the long weekend. Again we just booked directly with Eurocamp.

Thing to Note with Eurocamp

Whether you book with Eurocamp directly or through the Sun Holidays note that it isn’t directly with De Schatberg. As you get to the barrier with your car there’s a little hut to the right hand side. This is where Eurocamp are.

People are not always there but there is a phone number and they responded to me straight away. We paid for early check in so we could get some sleep sooner as it was cheaper and easier to travel when leaving home at silly o’clock. So them being quick was very much appreciated.

The Accommodation at De Schatberg

The break with the Sun Holidays we were in a caravan. It came with a complimentary cleaning kit to ensure we left it all spick and span. With warnings about fines if you left it a mess.

Directly it was cheaper to book a tent (less than £300 for 3 nights for the Bank Holiday weekend for 3 of us). However, the tent had built in proper beds and other facilities which you’d expect to find in a caravan. Including those all-important charging points. The main difference was not being able to lock it up and having to go to a communal toilet and shower block.

Times of Year

During the October half term we found things to be closed. Including the lake in which you could swim in. It was having work done to it but I feel that it is also mostly likely due to the fact that it would have been colder than most people would be able to cope with.

May did see it open and lots of people enjoying it and the little beach area.

Getting To De Schatberg

For the first time our son wanted to go over on the ferry that leaves from the Hook of Holland. This is actually more driving than needs be but gives the driver a break. Especially if you need to travel to any of the channel crossings.

For the first time ever crossing on the ferry we hired cabins and they were well worth it!

Second time we used the Eurotunnel LeShuttle. Seemed a really popular choice for those travelling with dogs.

Both times we utilised Tesco Clubcard rewards. These are gained by simply doing our food shop, so not anything extra.

Without a Car

Getting there without a car I am not sure how doable it would be. Nor how you would access the many different parkrun locations. However, it may be an option, just not something we have tried. Obviously as an alternative you could fly and hire a car.

Other Benefits of Going to De Schatberg

De Schatberg offers plenty of play areas and many additional entertainment and eateries within walking distance. Both on and off site.

It was hot when we stayed the second time, and so staying there was much better for us than a stuffy hotel room. With a BBQ and table for us to play board games on.

Also a good base for:

Attractions such as Toverland.

Intratuin Duiven Christmas World (Garden Centre)
