Sun Holiday Codes January – Why it is the best time to book

Sun holiday codes

Why you should collect Sun Holiday Codes in January

I think January is the best time to sort out your holiday. Firstly, the slum of after Christmas can make people feel a bit miserable, and having something to look forward to always gives a bit of a boost. It’s a much better way to spend your money than on things you do not really need, but buy them just because they are in the sales. Because if you have money to book your holiday at this time of year then you are doing well because not everyone has any spare cash left after Christmas. Not only that but you are onto a winner because you can make some great savings. I find things are much cheaper in January (up until Blue Monday when prices tend to shoot up, this year it believed to fall on Monday 20th January). For instance, I always book our Ferry in January through Tesco, who normally change their £10 clubcard = £30 Ferry tokens to £40.

Is it worth collecting the Sun Holiday Codes ?

Personally, for our family of 6, even a trip away with our tent is more expensive (in the UK). We have always been happy with the price we have paid, compared with how much we would have to pay if we tried any other way of having even a comparable holiday. Do take a look at how much it cost us (3 adults and 3 children) to go abroad in July, staying in a theme park). The Sun Holiday Codes come out several times throughout the year, meaning that you can book more than one. We have actually booked a Monday-Friday, followed straight by a Friday-Monday break in the Isle of Wight this year.

The Sun Holiday does come with a ‘Best Price Guarantee’ – that is that the price of the Sun Holiday (with service charge & entertainment/clubroom passes added) will be the best price for exactly the same holiday (location/date/accommodation type), when a maximum of 4 people are sharing with no optional extras. If, in these circumstances, within 28 days of making the Sun booking they will refund the difference plus £10. I think that it is unfortunate that they are only are really offering this to families of 4, and the same applies with the Ferry, as the promotional codes that are sent do not match the requirements of our vehicle.

Do consider that how much you pay is dependent on where you go and when. Do you want a particular holiday or do you have a certain budget? What kind of holiday are you after? If you are used to going all-inclusive then these may not end up being the cheapest way to take a holiday – but if you want a bargain break and are willing to do all your own cooking then I really do recommend them. I have to admit that when we went to Torbay, Devon in April it was bitterly cold, that would have been the same if we had of paid more money but not if we had of opted to go somewhere with a hotel (for example) – so it really does boil down to what you want, and what you are prepared to pay.

Sun Holiday codes

You can further save money on your Sun Holiday by taking your own linen and taking off the optional Entertainment passes. These cover the pool, bars, restaurants etc, and it may depend on the time of year (could you use the sea for free as opposed to the pool) or the nearby attractions. We actually found it to be hot enough in October that the boys did not want to use the entertainment passes but stayed in the sea. Our in-laws had opted out of having them and were offered them on arrival, and told they could purchase them at any point during their stay. Some parks have FREE entertainment passes or are otherwise between £2 and £15 per person per break (pppb).

Some parks on some dates are guaranteed to cost no more than £9.50 per person (based on 4 people sharing). Based on the fact that children are unable to miss school now, and not everyone can get a week off work I complied which parks and dates are guaranteed to be only£9.50:

See Sun Holidays Weekends that cost no more than £9.50 in East Anglia

Thinking about your location before the Sun Holiday Codes are all available

Once the codes come out people move pretty quickly, so it is really worth considering where you would like to go and to which parks (see the Sun Holiday Park List). Also consider alternative options – or whether you would be happy just going to a particular area.

How are you going to get there? Sun holidays to Europe do not include flights – a long drive may cost more in fuel/ferry crossings than a flight included in a package deal (see my post on whether long ferry journeys are worth it). Each of the parks tell you how much extra they charge, so you can work out how much each park would cost you depending on the size of your party. Look out for the Ferry deals too – again be aware that they may not be right for your vehicle (we have a people carrier with top box making it higher than normal) and the sun code did not apply.

  3. Thanks for the heads up on this! We are a family of 6, although my elder two children may possibly not come away with us on a short break as they are 18 and 16 now. However, we are involved with the Irish Retriever Rescue charity and last year camped for the first time in about 6 years. I was wary as I have a bad back, but we borrowed an inflatable mattress (the really high type) from my in-laws and it all worked well, so we are hoping to get away a couple of times this year and any money we can save is welcomed!

  4. We did quite a few of the Sun breaks before the kids arrived but haven’t looked at them for a while, it’s worth remembering them as we had some fantastic breaks – bookmarked 😉

  5. What a great post – it certainly pays to be organised if you’re going to collect them it seems. It’s a great way of being able to sort out the holiday early. Thank you for all of the great tips.

  6. Fascinating read, it was expensive to even contemplate going away with one child this year so I can only imagine what it’s like when you are a family of 6.

  7. Hi, thanks for all the info, wondering if you can explain something for me? Viewed the parks list and each park has some dates and prices shown at the bottom of each park page, does it mean that you can only select and book a holiday on the dates shown there? Got the Sun today which included a booklet on all the parks and the same applied in the booklet, I.e. Just a few dates not the entire dates listed as being the possible dates that you can start your holiday. Many thanks!

    • On the list I got it just had dates at the bottom that were guaranteed to be either £9.50 or £15.00. As far as I’m aware then all the dates are a possibility but not all parks will be available on all dates. It’s a bit of a lottery like that and why they recommend you put down so many choices of dates and parks. Things not known for a fact but guessed are things like I believe none of the Butlins breaks accommodate 6 people. If you are able to do it online it’s better because if your choices do not come up then you can go back and do it again. They do refund your money if none of your dates and parks come up (doing it the paper way). Hope that helps you and good luck with getting your first choice.

  8. Hi,
Lovely blog, i am rather gutted that i have only just come across this, as it appears that not only have i missed the 4th but i will have also missed today (the 5th). If i can find the codes (partners work mates will probably have a newspaper lieing around in the van) when do i apply for the holiday? Can i apply before i have all 10 codes, or must i have all 10 to then be able to book? Can I also do it online? Also what is the final dates for the codes? as it would be interesting to know if they actually published more than 10.. then i wouldnt need to find the first two.

Kind regards if you can help,
    many thanks

  9. The codes are above if you’ve never done it before. You have to have all 10 codes to apply to book – and yes just visit the Sun website to book online. Yes they do publish more than 10 – they are printed every day until Tuesday January 28th 2014.

  11. Thanks very much for the info – we went on a sun break to France last year and had a great time. We are getting some friends to book this year and when I read details on the Sun website it implied that they couldn’t book online as they would be first time bookers. It said that they needed a reference number to be able to book online so can you confirm that they don’t and just need that extra code as that means we can all book together rather than sending off a postal application with different choices on for them and waiting to see whether they get the same as us?

    Reply
    • My advice would be for them to make sure that they buy the paper to fall back on (I’d hate for them to lose out). BUT I basically got this code in my pack through the post saying to pass on to a friend. I have since seen this shared online (the same code) and it is the same as mine so am assuming it is not limited to me giving to one person. As I say I’m not affiliated with The Sun just trying to help people out so cannot guarantee anything. This is the first time I have been sent a code. And your friends must not have ever booked before is the only other thing I read from it. Best of luck.

  12. Thanks for publishing the codes as I’m not a fan of The Sun. Trip Advisor can be quite off putting but we’ve had some great breaks to Ruda at Croyde Bay (excellent caravan and facilities), Hendra at Newquay (another great site and caravan) and a John Fowler site at Combe Martin.

  13. Very good information and comments, we have also been thinking of trying to link up a Friday – Monday followed by Monday to Friday as the long journey for 4 days is a bit daunting as we get older. Any tips on how to manage this?
    Thanks

    • Obviously there aren’t guarantees but as The Sun release the holidays several times a year it is possible to get one and then another. The last 2 times they were released a booked a Mon-Fri followed by a Fri-Mon – I didn’t get the same park but the same area which wont be much to travel in between. This time we could then opt for the Mon-Fri following that but are opting for different dates. I think there is talk that it is letting you book more than once – again, as far as I know, this is new for this year and not something I have experience of so wouldn’t like to say how true that is. Alternatively are there any camp sites closer to home?

  14. Hi, you say the online site opens to book on saterday night but how will we know the last code till the paper comes out on the 12th? Thanks in advance. Great website.

    • From what I can make out if it’s your first time you can but please don’t rely on my say so. I got the code to pass on to a friend and from what I assume you can then use it online but it is the first time that this has been offered. I’d recommend getting the paper copy too to be safe.

  15. Hi thanks for this post and informative read – I was looking for Monday’s code so thank you. I don’t understand the 1st code though? I see you’ve replied to someone else that you had it sent through the post, is that something to do with being a prior customer and having priority to book earlier?
If so, if I use that code as a new customer, is it still a goodun? Many thanks!

  16. If the booking site opens Saturday it doesn’t matter because you still need Sundays code don’t you? Even with priority booking.

  17. I would just like to say thank you fir the codes as I had missed a couple. We go every year with the sun and have had some fantastic holidays, but some not so good ones. The only thing I can recommend is that you check out the sites reviews online first it would give you a good indication of how good the site is. We now stick to the larger group sites like haven and park resorts. Thanks again,

  18. Just read a reply where the question was do you have to put in 4 dates. Can you clarify this for me because while we’re happy to holiday anywhere (gosh we need a break!), I only have one week of annual leave that I can take as a whole. So I can only give one date, does the online system accept that? (of course I run my chances of not getting it but I simply can’t put 4 options down).

      • Thank you Pinkoddy you’ve been very helpful, one last question, how do you get onto the priority bookings? The sunbookonline.co.uk site still says it opens on Monday, am I missing a trick? Desperate for a break so will be on the ball when the newsagents open tomorrow just want to give ourselves the best chance!

  19. Okay I’ve found the priority booking site, are the codes one time only for priority customers? If they’re generic is anyone willing to share? x

  20. Booked mine! Bought the paper on my way home from work and got my missing one (yesterday) from you. Thanks! 🙂
Interestingly, it wouldn’t bring up my 1st choice in search. Whatever I changed my 2nd choice to, it brought that up. So I changed my 1st choice, to my 2nd choice and got the one I wanted! How silly! xx

  21. Good morning!

This is the first time I have collected The Sun tokens/codes.
It says above ‘If you have ”never” booked a Sun Holiday before you can use the code word LOOK and 9 other codes’
Does that mean a non-priority booker can use the extra code-word ‘look’ after midnight tonight – or do I need to get up early tomorrow to get the paper for the 10th code?
    Thanks

  23. Apologies if this has been asked but I don’t understand. My friend wants to book a holiday – never done it before. When she goes to the website it says that she needs the priority booking number, even though she’s got all the codes. She’s now missed the paper tokens. How does she book through the site without a booking reference? Many thanks

    • Sorry I did misunderstand the code word they sent me and thought people would be able to book online if they hadn’t previously (would have saved a fortune in staff time sorting through paper copies). It isn’t too late to collect the 10 tokens though as they are still being printed.

So frustrated, I’ve spent hours sussing out which hols would be best and now I can’t book them! Please help! What website should I go to and what should I do to be able to book????

  26. Does anyone know what months/dates the £9.50 holidays come out in the newspapers. Is it just The Sun or do other papers do the cheap holidays. I want to go to Disneyland in Paris! So was thinking of trying to get place as near to there as possible, then buy my park tickets online. Which may I add its £282.00 for 2 adults to go to both parks for 3 days. Mind you having said all this I would even settle for a trip back Skeggy, as I tried living there for 23 yrs. Its so nice to see Pinkoddy doing all this for us all, putting codes etc. It needs more people like that in the day and age. Thank you Pinkoddy your a credit to what your doing on here. Please let me know answer to my question, and I know this may sound dumb, but is it too late to book for Jan offer, does it have certain date you have to book by. Thank you

    • Hi Michele thank you very much. The codes come out again in the Autumn. There’s also codes in the Daily Mail and some local papers. The Sun also do camping holidays but as yet we’ve not looked into them as most campsites don’t allow for our large tent.

As for Disney la-croix-du-vieux-pont is supposed to be a good camp near Disney with The Sun holidays. Whenever I’ve priced it up it’s better to book straight with Disney. For instance if we went this October half term for Halloween it would cost me around £1,000 Mon-Fri for 3 adults and 3 children (when I looked January it was). That gives magic hours to the park too which made a massive difference when we went. That’s driving there though – but this means it’s cheaper as you can take food which can be expensive over there.
