The Brook Kids Outdoors

I really don’t know where time is running away to. We had such a packed summer that I really never got around to blogging about hardly any of it. It was nice that both me and the boys were away from the computers.

Do you remember my very organised friend Kate who organised a bug hunt ? Well she organised a few things for us all to do over the summer too – and one of them was to get our nets (from the pound shop) and head over to the Brook for some good old-fashioned fun.

We opted for wellies – this was great whilst in the brook as we didn’t lose them as they didn’t come off.

However, I should have taken something else for them to walk home in, or some spare long socks at least. The poor boys legs didn’t half rub. It also shows me how much my youngest speech has come on since then as he did try to tell me but I just thought he was tired, I think now he would be able to tell me his wellies hurt.

So off we set, walking across the fields and why go round when you can go over the gate!

All the children had a great time and even caught some fish. It was really nice to see them all bonding together too, learning about the dangers of the brook (bits suddenly getting deep), and looking out for one another.

It was good to go with a bunch of friends because it wouldn’t have been safe for me to take my 3 youngest on my own. Here my son wanted to walk right to the edge – a perfect photo moment.

We had been to the local swimming pool the day before and I said I don’t know why we wasted our money – they loved it in the Brook. All keen to get as wet as they possibly could!

And of course I got right in there too :O)

When I was a child I used to love finding out where all the tunnels went (this one was too deep for the children though).

There was a rope swing across the brook and my 10 year old (below) fell off and landed on some rocks just before this photo – he was bruised and hurt but so brave – he just got up and carried on playing with his friends. Below is where they had found some water running down some steps and my youngest loved going down again and again. This was another time that the other children really helped each other.

We really made a day of it, and took a packed lunch with us. This really did show that the summer holidays do not have to cost a lot as this was all free (apart from the nets at £1 each which you could have done it without).

  6. What a brilliant day! Fishing isn’t something we haven’t done yet – although I think it’s something my oldest will do with the Scouts soon – but just getting nets and having fun pond-dipping would be great for them 🙂

  9. That’s as close to nature as you can get, that too without spending too much! Looks like you had a great time, apart from the poor boy’s fall, of course.
