I was gifted a The Zerowater 12-Cup Filter for the purposes of this post.

Why use a Water Filter Jug?

Water is so important for all of us on a daily basis. Not everywhere has water that is safe to drink straight from the tap and we personally have had a water filter jug for a good many years. Not only are they good for ensuring good quality clean water to drink but it helps maintain the life of appliances such as our kettle and iron. When I was asked me if I would like to review The Zerowater 12-Cup Filter costs £39.99 from Zerowater.co.uk I thought it would give me a good reason to drink more water (by having a water filter upstairs as well as down). We also gave our eldest son a water filter jug for use at university so that he would cut down on single-use plastic bottles.

About the Zerowater 12 Cup Filter Jug (2.8 litres)

The Zerowater filter jug is easy to set up with clear and simple instructions. Simply remove all packaging and twist into place. There’s no need to keep wasting water – just filter and it is ready to use straight away.

The Zerowater 12-Cup Filter Vs Brita Water Filter

The Zerowater 12-cup filter is different to a Brita Water filter jug because it removes 95% of all metals compared to 68% from Brita. UK. Zerowater removes 97% of lead, 96% of mercury, 95% of chlorine and even 97% of asbestos which is often displaced from old and ageing water pipes – it can even turn red wine into water (why anyone would want to do this is beyond me but still!): This is because Zerowater gets better results due to a 5-stage filter, whilst most filters only have 2-stage. Stage 1 removes suspended solids that make the water appear cloudy. Stage 2 distributor for even flow. Stage 3 removes organic contaminants. Stage 4 removes inorganic compounds and stage 5removes the remaining suspended solids.

The 12-Cup Zerowater comes with a free TDS Reader (Total Dissolved Solids). Some areas of the UK have reading more than 300. When water is filtered through the Zerowater filter it will score 0. This is also an indication of when your filter will need replacing – rather than over a set period of time (as it is replaced when the meter reads 006). Different local water conditions will determine how often this is. In the laboratory the filter lasted for 15 gallons.

The Zerowater filter jug comes with a handy dispenser button at the back – which means that it can be filled straight into a glass without any heavy lifting. Perfect for children and the elderly who may struggle with the weight of a full filter jug.

The Cons of the Zerowater Filter Jug

Honestly I did think there was a slight difference in taste in the Zerowater – but maybe that is a matter of not being used to it, which would be worth preserving with seeing as it would be better for us. Saying that our teen did not think it tasted dissimilar to that of the water straight from the tap. The other possible problem is that the jug does not easily fit into the door of the fridge freezer – but we do not keep ours there anyway. Finally we have not seen any replacement filters available in the shops, likewise places to recycle the old ones. Although you can buy them online and even get a £5 voucher off when you submit your water reading.

So is a Zerowater Filter Jug better than a Brita Water Filter?

The Zerowater filter jug is better than a Brita Water filter because it removes more impurities making the water better to drink. The TDS also means that filters are replaced based on when they stop being efficient rather than on time. The Zerowater filter is also easier to use for those who may struggle with the weight of a full jug, such as the elderly and children, with a handy dispensing button. It does however appear to have a bit of a taste to get used to.
